COVID Collages
During the Covid-19 pandemic, we all faced challenges like nothing we had ever experienced in our lifetimes. It was a time of turmoil, fear, uncertainty and isolation, and for many, terrible loneliness. Each of us had to try to find ways to handle those challenges as the weeks and months went by.
In the summer of 2020, I challenged myself to make a small collage every day, partly to get me working in my studio every day, but also to give my life structure and an emotional and creative outlet during this difficult time. I learned so much. There were good days and bad. I lost my discomfort about making art on small surfaces and would venture to say that I have mastered the 4’ x 6’ index card format. Once a week, I made a slightly larger piece. I found myself loosening up and making, for me, quite spontaneous and bold marks. I created a body of work of which I am immensely proud. It was incredibly rewarding in so many ways, but mostly it kept me grounded through those long months.
What you see here is a selection of my Covid Collages, a project that continued for 209 days. All ‘worthy’ collages have been mounted on a gallery-depth cradle panel and varnished. I have transcribed my written reflections, much like journal entries, from the back of each collage onto the back of each panel. In many ways, the collection continues to speak about an infamous and hopefully, unique time.
