Journey / Voyage
“Life is a journey, not a destination” is a well-used truism. That’s probably because it expresses something quite profound and worthy of being repeated in this crazy, competitive, complex world of ours. Julia chose the title “Journey” for her solo show because creative endeavour has been constant part of her life since childhood. It has always been her ‘place to go’. It has been the impetus for determination and bravery, walking into classrooms and workshops in unfamiliar places, not knowing a soul. It has led to friendships, meeting lots of people who understood the language of art and shared her thirst for knowledge.
At 40, Julia’s love of art led her to a career change, five years at university, a BFA and teaching degree, all of which threw her world wide open to new discoveries and new forms of creation.
Art was Julia’s safe harbour when life and relationships were challenging. Art allowed her to discover and express who she is, what she loves and cares about and to search for meaning in life and in the world. Whether going through a period of struggle or creating something new and exciting, her art practice has always be a joy and an escape. It is the place she goes where all the noise in her head has purpose and focus.
The most recent leg of this journey was an art retreat in Sicily in 2025. Among fifteen strangers in a breathtakingly beautiful land, something shifted. Stripped of familiarity, but enveloped in love and support, she stepped into herself more fully—into her voice, her seeing, and her way of working. This work carries that moment forward. It holds the movement from uncertainty into knowing, from searching into presence. Journey is not a destination—it is the act of becoming.
